Celebrating our Singing Insects of North America

NPR Interview with Liane Hanson

If you missed our interview with Liane Hanson on NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday you can listen to it here. We had a great time talking with Liane and the producers did a marvelous job editing the piece.
We certainly would like to thank them for their time and for working with us.

Spring Field Crickets Singing

Many of you in the mid-latitudes of eastern North America have no doubt noticed that the chirping of crickets can be heard again. These are the Spring field crickets, Gryllus veletis, that have over wintered as nymphs and have just recently molted into their adult form. Their happy caroling can be heard from mid-morning well into the night. It is a wonder repose to sit quietly and listen to the crickets chirp allowing the cares of the day to melt away into the distance.
Go out this evening and sit, calm your mind and listen to the songs of these first singers on the scene.
